The black box represents the tradition of the lottery as well as the fatuity behind it.  The villagers participate in the lottery without knowing why they do it.  The black box holds the power to kill one villager but the box is falling apart.  It is old and scratched and none of the villagers question its authority.  It is illogical for the villagers to follow this old box and tradition just because it is a “tradition”.

The black dot drawn on the slip of paper symbolizes a few things.  It represents how quickly family bonds and friendships can be broken because of one little mark.  Every family stands together and friends are chatting but when Tessie becomes the unlucky winner by selecting the black dot they turn against her. Even her own son throws a rock at her.

The dot also symbolizes human brutality.  As soon as Tessie Hutchinson chooses the slip of paper containing the dot every other villager surrounds her and beats her to death with stones.  This is extremely brutal and the black dot causes the villagers to turn on such a dear friend and family member.
